Minister

Rev. Rebecca Gant was born and lived in a small town in south-central Kansas called Medicine Lodge until leaving to attend The University of Kansas. After some wandering among various majors, she settled on an education degree in middle/secondary English and Spanish.  She married Joe, her partner now of more than 30 years, the week she graduated. She taught school for four years and then worked as a stay-at-home mom for her two daughters and as an active community volunteer.  Along the way, she completed an additional Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and a Master’s in English.

Rebecca grew up in the United Methodist church.  However, in 2006 when she was serving as the part-time Director of Children’s Ministries at a Lawrence church, it became clear that the denomination’s theology and its stance on LGBTQ+ inclusion were not a fit for her.  Later that year, she attended the UU Congregation of Lawrence, KS and felt she’d found her home.  She served in many leadership positions at UUCL, including adult faith formation, membership, restructuring governance, discerning mission and vision, Our Whole Lives, leadership development, as board president, and as an all-around organizer, instigator, and facilitator.

In 2017, she applied to Meadville Lombard Theological School (a UU-identity seminary in Chicago). With that decision, she outwardly acknowledged the longing that had been present for more than ten years and began her journey toward ordained ministry. In her free time, she enjoys making things from fiber or paper, traveling, getting lost in a book, movie or well-written TV series, and sharing belly laughs with friends.
